WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A BRAZILIAN COACH?
Association Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in Brazil. The Brazilian National Football team has won the FIFA World Cup Tournament a record five times, in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, and is the only team to succeed in qualifying for every World Cup competition ever held. It is among the favorites to win the trophy every time the competition is scheduled.
Pelé, arguably the greatest footballer ever, led Brazil to three of those championships and is the top scorer of all times in the sport. All of the leading players in the national teams are prominent in the football world, including Garrincha, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Romário, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Neymar in the men's game and Marta in the women's game. Some of these players can be considered super-stars, achieving celebrity status internationally and signing sports contracts, as well as advertisement and endorsement contracts, in the value of millions of dollars.
Brazilians have always had a love affair with football and the sport has played a powerful role in shaping the Brazilian national identity. There is a saying that football is not a sport, it’s a religion. Any empty space becomes a field, any two objects in parallel become a goal, anything you can kick becomes a ball to lead to the dream of becoming the new Neymar and to pursue a football career.
Career path for football players is taken very serious – 15-year-old boys have agents and earn salaries around $30k/year besides the whole infrastructure offered only for the academies. Brazilian Premier Soccer Academies spend around 4 million dollars per year with their structure to develop and coach upcoming football stars.
All that importance led Brazilian congressmen to approve a bill stating that it is illegal practice to coach any sport if not holding a 4-year degree in Physical Education since 1998. The 4-year degree or Bachelor in Physical Education is established to have minimum 3200 hours divided in classes, internships and related congress participation. Classes include fundamental human body functionality like Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology and Bio-mechanics; training theories and methodologies; teaching methodologies, pedagogy, psychology and sociology; physical evaluation, human body behavior and growth. On top of this base curriculum the student can choose a path towards the field he/she wants, like football, volleyball, basketball, personal trainer and others available.
The Brazilian Universities are respected and well ranked in the Global Rank proposed by U.S. News as you can confirm at their website. The picture on the right have all of the Maryland Universities Global Ranked compared to the Brazilian Universities.
Besides the passion for the game and all cultural background, great university degree with more than 3k hours of formal study, all of the Brazilian Coaches have their own path that made them extremely qualified to coach.
